Understanding Age Groups

The US Soccer Association has implemented a new age matrix, which is different from what we're used to seeing here in Kingsburg. The new Age Matrix is January 1 - December 31. In simpler terms, whatever age your child is on December 31, that is their Playing Age.

For the 2017-2018 season, a child whose birthday is December 31, 2010, would have a Playing Age of seven (7) for the Fall Season (2017 portion) as well as the Spring Season (2018 portion). Likewise, a child whose birthday is January 1, 2010, would have a Playing Age of seven (7) for the Fall Season (2017 portion) as well as the Spring Season (2018 portion). Please see the Age Matrix to match birth year with the correct age group. If your child falls into an age group not listed, move up to the older team e.g. A U7 player would play on a U8 team.

  • A U5 Player can be 3 (turning 4 this year), or 4;
  • A U6 Player can be 4 (turning 5 this year), or 5;
  • A U8 Player can be 5 (turning 6 this year), 6, or 7;
  • A U10 Player can be 7 (turning 8 this year), 8, or 9;
  • A U12 Player can be 9 (turning 10 this year), 10, or 11;
  • A U14 Player can be 11 (turning 12 this year), 12, or 13;
  • A U16 Player can be 13 (turning 14 this year), 14, or 15;
  • A U19 Player can be 15 (turning 16 this year), 16, 17, or 18.

Many larger leagues have teams in every age group, e.g. U6, U7, U8, etc. Kingsburg registration counts can't support this ideal so we have combined certain age groups:

U5 and U6 teams are co-ed teams. All older age groups are grouped by boy/girl.

KYSL teams are labeled as U5, U6, U8, etc. and is exactly what it says "Under __ ". Only children younger than the age group header will play on the team. With the new Age Matrix standard, there will not be a child playing on a team whose age is described in the age group (e.g. no 8 year old will be playing on a U8 team).

With older teams, some registrants may need to play up to complete a team. If there are not enough registrants to form a team, league registration fees will be refunded.

***Parents, please do not think that your child will be playing with older children, they are not. Everybody is in the same boat and age requirements have changed for everybody.***

In accordance to CYSA and US Soccer regulation, and for the safety of other children on teams, children cannot play down into a younger age group, NO EXCEPTIONS. However, players may play up with the consent of the Parent(s), Head Coach, League Commissioner, and Board of Director approval. Please download the form from this website.
